Let's Go Fishing
Keith Sampertiori from Montgomery Adventures will be coming to fourth grade on Thursday, May 16, and we're going to learn to fish! We will be eating lunch at 11:00, and Mr. Sampertiori will join us at 11:30. We will be spending time outside, and students are strongly encouraged to wear sunblock and bring a water bottle. It should be a great day!

Conferences
Parent-Student Conferences are coming up soon, and the teaching staff has been scheduling times for your child to share their learning with you. I believe I have coordinated times with siblings in different classrooms. You should be receiving other teachers' schedules soon if you have not already. Please look at the schedule below and mark your conference time on your calendar. Plan on conferences with your student to take about 20 minutes. There will be some cross over with other students in the room, but you and your child will have enough room and privacy. Because students are leading these conferences, I did schedule them early. If you are unable to attend at your scheduled time, please let me know as soon as possible. I would like to have a final schedule posted by the end of the week.

Old Student Work
As I rearrange the classroom and continue to organize fourth grade materials, I'm finding paperwork students completed with Mrs. Allen before Christmas break. Grades from these assignments were recorded in first semester report cards and do not reflect students' current work and ability. Be aware that many of these papers will be sent home this week.
Recess
Recess times for the entire school have been changed. All students have the opportunity for recess in the morning until 8:15. They will come in from recess and breakfast and be ready to start Morning Meeting at 8:20. If you drop your child off at school, please make sure he or she is in line to come in with our class by 8:15.
Because of the increased morning recess time, our after lunch recess has been shorted. We will go outside at the same time (12:00), but we will come in at 12:15 instead of 12:30.

Opinion Writing Podcasts
Before break, students compiled several opinion writing pieces during our Writing Workshop. Each student chose one piece to revise, edit, and publish in the form of a podcast. Below are some of these pieces.

Vermont Book List
We will be studying Vermont in science and social studies which includes a lot of reading. Our classroom is lacking in books set in Vermont, so I'm putting in a request for parent support. Below, I've created links to Vermont book lists. Any book donations would be greatly appreciated by the whole class. Thank you!

Papers
Papers are coming home! As I continue to sift through materials from Mrs. Allen's classroom, I am finding more and more papers to send home. Several lovely students will be helping pass back papers on Tuesday. Most of these papers were graded by Mrs. Allen. I'm just returning them home so you have more information about the work completed before Christmas break. Check PowerSchool for information about current assignments and grade information.
We will continue our work with fractions and measurement in math, and we'll be starting our Vermont ecology unit after break.

4A Weekly Update
Happy Tuesday! Life in 4th grade has been busy and productive.
Classroom Expectations
As a class, we have been reviewing our five classroom rules and working on ways to support each other to be successful and create our ideal classroom. As I told students on Friday, building an ideal classroom takes time, patience, and team work, but I believe every single student in our class can rise to the high expectations we have set. Please help support your child by reinforcing positive and appropriate social interactions, modeling problem solving behavior, and encouraging reading and learning.
Report Cards
Student report cards will be sent home by the end of this week. Reading scores will come from your child's reading teacher. All other scores will come from me. I am looking at information left by Mrs. Allen and using work we've done in class during January. I will also include a progress report for math which gives letter/percent grades for assignments and assessments completed in class.

January Student of the Month
Our January Student of the Month goal is to know 80% or more of the multiplication facts 0-5. There are several links to review games on the Math Resources page.
Measuring Gas
In class, we are learning about the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. We performed our first science experiment of 2013 mixing vinegar and baking soda to produce carbon dioxide to inflate a balloon. We varied the amount of each ingredient and measured the circumference of the balloon. Below are additional experiments using vinegar and baking soda.
